With an area of over 2.2 million square kilometres, Nunavut accounts for about 24% of mainland Canada. More than 80% of the population is of Inuit descent origin. 640 people reported French as their mother tongue in 2016, representing 1.8% of the territory’s total population. Francophones are scattered in several villages but most of them live in the capital, Iqaluit.
